Big baby news, guys – one of my friends is due! She must be getting very cross with me texting her everyday saying “do you have a baby yet?”
Nothing, for now.
Baby Hat – Diamond Brocade
I found out that these friends were going to have a baby in August. That would have been the ideal time to cast something on for them – but I am blaming the fact that I didn’t entirely on the fact that I started my new job.
Getting past the start of 2014, I suddenly realised that we were now terribly close to the due date…and it was high time to do something. I’ve had “Blankets, Hats and Booties to Knit and Crochet” for years, and out it came again last week.
The pattern is Diamond Brocade, which comes with a really cute blanket and bootie set. The hat itself took just a few hours to knit while we were watching Sherlock. I knitted it in cotton, and am overall pleased with it.
HOWEVER. It is massive. I don’t know if it’s going to fit on a newborn’s head. It also doesn’t look very appropriately shaped. Having never had a baby myself, and not really had much contact with them, I don’t know how big their heads generally are…But if I had to push the head that fits this hat out, I would be most unhappy.
I think I may have fallen foul of the fact that I didn’t knit a gauge swatch. I didn’t think I would need to – the yarn was perfect, my tension is generally good, and I’ve knitted so many gauge swatches in the last two weeks that I forsook this practice.
Lesson learned.
I’ve sent it off regardless…I put the work in, and we will see what happens with it!
Do you have any similar stories of woe to share with the room?
Much love,
Corrie xx
PS I’m sorry for the tone of this blog post. I really don’t know what has happen to my inner monologue today, hopefully it will sit down in a corner and think about things for a while this weekend.
Babies actually have surprisingly round and shallow heads, so that might work. Newborns are about 12-13″ around and 4-5″ tall head-wise.

I’ve only just revisited this post, and this resource is incredibly great. Thank you!!
I think your hat is lovely, it might fit the baby so do have surprisingly big heads!
It does look big, but babies grow so quickly. Love the blue.
Baby hats are so frustrating. I have a couple I’ve knit and I never get the size right.
I knit several hats for Christmas and even though I matched gauge, two of them turned out HUGE. I had to remake them both and one wasn’t done in time. I’ve decided to just knit a hat, see how it turns out and donate that one to charity if it’s not the right size.
