In a fit of the grumps on Tuesday, I decided not to work on anything that I was supposed to be working on (JS and I have an idea that we are developing slowly). Instead, I watched all the Harry Potter films and knitted a hat in two hours.

The pattern was from Melody Griffiths “Knitting in No Time” – no time is right! It’s the second pattern I’ve knitted from this book, and I have to say I love it. I’ll do a more in-depth review of the book at some point.

I had 66 yards of handspun, which I unfortunately didn’t take a photo of. I wasn’t sure what I could use it to make, so I had a flick through the book and found a pattern called “Quick-to-Knit Earflap Hat”, which required some super-bulky yarn. My handspun wasn’t bulky enough, so I knitted it up with a ball of Rowan Big Wool that I’ve had in my stash for years, and was given by my parents for Christmas one year.

In the time it took me to knit this hat, I watched just one Harry Potter film. It was amazing how quickly it went – such a delight to use my own handspun and knit something that I can actually wear. I also learned to do a four-stranded braid for the tassel.

It’s received a lot of admiration already, which is fairly gratifying. People can’t believe I spun and dyed the yarn myself – I even managed to tell one of my friends exactly which sheep it came from, which he seemed impressed by. (Please excuse how tired I look in the photos. It was the morning after Graduation and I had a night of deprived sleep!)

A delightful project, and I recommend you try it if you can get your hands on a copy of the book, especially if you’re a beginning spinner and don’t know what to do with small amounts of yarn.
