Two at a time socks

I’m working on socks again! To be honest, though, this is the only knitting project I’m really having a go at everyday – I had a drawing lesson this week and have been doing a lot of drawing, which I find is a bit nicer for summer weather as I just get sleepy when I go sit in a park and knit. The hamsters are also keeping me busy – keep updated on their antics here.

However, I do have a go at one or two rows of the socks every day while I’m on the tube to and from work, and they are slowly growing.

Two at a Time Socks

I decided I need to learn to do two at a time socks just before I went to South Africa – I suffer from second sock syndrome badly, especially when the pattern is relatively simple. I did a bit of research, and selected Two-at-a-Time Toe-Up Socks by Lisa Kent ($1.99 on Ravelry).

I had two balls of Strømpegarn Tiger yarn from when I visited the Tottenham Court Road Tiger Shop with my friend from Harmonic Oscillator Knits. [If you’ve never been to a Tiger store, you must go. Now. That’s an order. It was one of the best Friday nights I’ve had with a knitting friend!]

These balls of yarn were just £1 each, and they are 75% wool, 25% polyamide (acrylic basically). You get 170 m of yarn per ball, and the only downside as far as I can see (given that they were so cheap…) is that it is handwash only. This is not a problem, actually, because all of our woolens are handwashed…so I am very happy to be using it.

The pattern is fine* – it took me a while to figure out how to start the toe of each sock, and I did cast on three times. If you’ve ever knitted a hexipuff, the technique is the same…but I never got hexipuffs right either, so this is something I need to work on. It’s quite a nice knit – although next time I will use circular needles with longer cables, as I’m not finding that I have enough room when I switch socks.

Progress - halfway up my foot. Not long till the heel-turn happens...eek!

I’m very happy to have a simple project, however, and I’m really looking forward to wearing them. I haven’t decided if I’m going to make two pairs of short socks, or if I’m going to make these ones super long. I’ll see how I feel when it comes to knitting the leg!

Much love,

Corrie xx

* I know this doesn’t sound like a glowing recommendation – I do think the pattern is good, but it was a little hard to understand the lines where the increases are described on the toe and I did wonder why I paid for it after I had. I’m sure I could find something else that was free. Still, I don’t begrudge the money – I get so many free patterns from Ravelry that it’s OK to spend some money sometimes, and it’s not like it cost a bomb. I’m just not completely blown away by the pattern, and oh my gosh I sound like such a spoiled kid saying that!!!

I tried doing taat socks and got in such a tangled muddle. I can definitely see the appeal of them, I’m just to prone to getting distracted and putting them down in a messy heap. I tend to stick to writing over detailed notes to remind me what I’m doing lol

  2. Ah yes…. two at a time socks…. on my list to try as well.

    Yours are looking great.

Well done for attempting the two-at-a-time socks! I tried it a couple of times but couldn’t be bothered with all the faff and ended up finishing them separately ;-)
    Yours are coming along nicely.

Love your hamsters. Have done two at a time once only. Might give it another try…yours look like they fit well.

I still get very confused with knitting socks two at a time. Yours are looking great.
